Fed up of moss clogging up fresh lawn? The Flymo lawn rake aims to save the hours of work, sore back and arms that can come with manually raking all the moss out. And at moss-removal, this beast excels—very quickly you will find yourself with more excess moss than you know what to do with, so make sure you have enough space in your green bin! The cost is higher than buying a rake, but probably less than hiring a professional scarifier, which makes it a great option for those on a budget.

Flymo Lawnrake Compact 3400 Review: Images

- 34L Collection Box
- Six raking heights from -5 mm to +8 mm, allowing the machine to work both underground and above ground

The handle folds nicely over the body to ensure that it takes up a very small space in storage – which is important as you are likely only to use it once or twice a year, the rest of the time taking up valuable space in the shed.
Assembly is fairly straight-forward, and if you are struggling then the instructions are printed in English. Just clip on wheels and handles and off you pop to remove the moss, just be careful if you are assembling in the front room not to rake up the carpet at the same time!
Once it’s all put together, adjust the height of raking tynes with one simple lever, and then simply plug in and off you go. Six settings are available – 1-3 for pulling out the moss and thatch, and raking the soil, 4-5 for light removal, and 6 for collecting your grass cuttings, twigs, autumn leaves or other lawn detritus.
Durability: 7.5
The classic thin plastic orange Flymo construction won’t make it last forever, but it will be robust enough for domestic use, and still lightweight enough to be easy to move around.
The lawnraker is also supplied with a few extra packs of replacement “tynes”, as occasionally these might get lost in the moss.
Rake Quality: 6
Even on the highest setting it tears an unbelievably high amount of moss and thatch right out of the lawn, without taking the grass with it. Within minutes you should have plenty of the stuff to dispose of, much faster than possible with a regular rake.
The height of the tines can be adjusted by one lever, and with a range of six heights there are plenty to experiment with.
Manoeuvrability: 8
At 12.6kg the lawnraker is fairly lightweight and easy to manoeuvre, but exercise extra care if lawns are especially bumpy, otherwise you risk removing too much moss,
What is the Difference Between a Lawnraker and a Scarifier?
Difference isn’t always made crystal clear, but generally, a rake brushes across the surface – to take leaves off for example, and a scarifier actually pushes down into the grass to perforate it and let air in.
The Flymo Lawnraker can both perforate the soil and brush the surface, according to your chosen setting.
