Whether you are moving house, or just replacing an older mower – you might have been thinking about how to cut your lawn now that spring is rolling around
In which case, if you are like most people in the UK and have a fairly small lawn, you should definitely be considering a push mower (I’m their biggest fan!)
These offer a completely different experience to a petrol mower, but I can tell you without hesitation that they are preferable to me – unless I am mowing a football field of course, that would just be silly. Here are a few of the benefits of push mowers, and a few things that you might want to be aware of before you make the switch.
1. Push Mowers are more economical
So not only are push mowers cheaper to buy, generally speaking, but are also cheaper to run.
And i’m talking significant savings, petrol powered mowers might run you upwards of 300 quid, but a traditional reel mower, and a good quality one at that, can be had for less than 100 quid.
The price of petrol is the other thing on everyones lips, but in fact with a reel mower you wil save this cost – ans save time filling it up!
Push mowers also cost less to maintain, they have a simple mechanism that requires only a little sharpening, but there is not alot that can really go wrong.
2. Push Reel Mowers are Environmentally Friendly
Petrol mowers are notorious for their fumes, infecting your lungs with that pernicious vapour.
Lawnmower engines can actually be worse than car engines in terms of pollutants, and not only is that bad for your health, but also potentially for your garden. The air quality will suffer, and when you inevitably spill some fuel as you refuel the mower for another run, this can cause groundwater contamination and is despicably hazardous if you have any pond wildlife in your garden.
3. Reel Mowers need Less Maintenance
Not only do you not need to refuel, but no need to change the oil, the spark plugs, or anything else that might go wrong with a complex petrol mower.
Reel mowers need only the occasional sharpening of the blades, or replacing if they are really past it. They also fit very easily in a shed.
4. Manual Mowers are quiet
When you mow with a push mower, you can hear the birds sing, you can hear your neighbours chatting ( if you really want to) and you can enjoy the peace and quiet instead of the roar of an engine – a far more pleasant experience,.
Things to Bear in Mind
Push mowers aren’t suited to every situation, in fact – before making the switch there are a few things that you should be aware of
- You cannot let the grass get too overgrown, otherwise it will become really difficult to cut.
- There are a range of different reel mowers available, and not all of them live up to the same standards. The fiskars staysharp is a solid choice for most.
- You need to keep the blades super sharp – otherwise you are just making more effort for yourself
